In advance of Bad Boys 4 — in which he plays the sort of fun-loving role people enjoy seeing Smith in — The Hollywood Reporter has learned that his agents at CAA have been calling studio production execs for the first time since the slap. Over the past three or four weeks, they have inquired if studios have projects that are right for Smith, and have even thrown out a suggestion or two, according to multiple sources. The hope is that Smith’s next film can be announced relatively quickly, should Bad Boys 4 work. And at least one major Hollywood studio is considering the actor for a high-profile project with branded IP if the movie finds success, says another source.

If there are five ages of man, maybe there are four ages of “Bad Boys.” There’s the early age — the original “Bad Boys” came out in 1995 — of youthful effrontery: zappy, flashy, mouthy, decadent. There’s the age when the heroes start to say, “We’re too old for this shit!” There’s the age when they’re too old to even be saying that.

And then there’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth entry in the franchise, in which the actors, the audience, and the whole culture is now so old for this shit that perhaps the only thing left to do is to ramp up the trash nostalgia to new levels of shameless overkill. It’s a truth of the universe that all blockbuster action series must come to an end (“Die Hard with a Lethal Weapon for Another 48 Hrs.” is now ancient history). But in “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence stoke our enthusiasm for that ballistic high-concept tradition with a midseason flair that hovers between antic and awesome.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is projected to gross upwards of $40 million in its domestic opening weekend and more than $75 million worldwide, Deadline reported, in what has otherwise been a disappointing summer at the box office.

The film benefits from being part of an already successful series: The “Bad Boys” films have grossed more than $840 million worldwide combined, and the last film, “Bad Boys For Life,” surpassed expectations to open with $62 million in 2020.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the second-best reviewed “Bad Boys” film, and the series has consistently been a hit with audiences, with the first three films all receiving an “A” rating from CinemaScore.

The following weekend, “Inside Out 2,” the sequel to Disney Pixar’s hit 2015 film, is projected to open with upwards of $80 million at the domestic box office, potentially surpassing “Dune: Part Two” as the best opening weekend of 2024 and suggesting June will be a stronger month than May at the theaters.
